93.859 -- Biomedical Research and Research Training
The National and Regional Resources (NRR) program supports NIGMS mission-related resources that can add value and achieve economies of scale by serving a substantial number of investigators (typically >100 per year) at a national or regional (multi-state) level. A resource is defined as an activity that provides research capabilities and expertise to a large number of researchers and is available to any qualified investigator. The intent is to provide access to investigators without regard to the particular biomedical focus of their research.
NRRs enable access to state-of-the-art technologies, methods and expertise essential to advancing biomedical research that may not be widely available to individual laboratories. Moreover, regional (multi-state) or national resources can achieve economies of scale by serving substantial numbers of users more efficiently and economically than activities that are maintained by individual institutions, each with its administrative, equipment, staffing and maintenance needs. This program provides support to established resources and new ones formed through consolidation of multiple existing regional or local facilities.
