      93.351 -- Research Infrastructure Programs

    Description

The Division of Program Coordination, Planning and Strategic Initiatives, Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications aimed at developing, characterizing, or improving research models of human health and diseases; developing biology based new approach methodologies (NAMs); or improving access to information about or generated from the use of models of human disease. The models, including NAMs, and related biological materials developed must be broadly applicable to the scientific interests of two or more NIH Institutes or Centers (ICs) and must evaluate diseases and processes that impact multiple organ systems in order to align with the ORIP’s NIH-wide mission and programs. Applications must describe the need for and the potential impact of the proposed resources on the research community across a range of scientific disciplines supported by multiple NIH ICs.

This NOFO will utilize the R24 activity code to support research projects that will enhance the capability of resources to serve biomedical research. This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. Details of the planned NOFO are provided below.

    Research Initiative Details

ORIP’s intent with this NOFO is to support resource-related research projects aimed at developing and characterizing new model resources, improving existing resources, developing NAMs, or acquiring deep understanding of a model system to improve the utilization, accessibility, and translational value of experimental research models to the research community. An application may be predominantly research based if that research potentially leads to the development of tools or resources that will have a broad impact on the biomedical research community. An application also may be aimed at final development or enhancement of existing resources. Applications should:

    • Demonstrate the need for the proposed resources or technologies/tools.
    • Address the impact, benefit, utilization, distribution, and accessibility of the proposed resources and technologies/tools.
    • Describe plans to track potential impact of the proposed resources and technologies/tools.
    • Describe plans to ensure the continued availability of the resources and technologies/tools to the research community.
    • Include replication and validation plan for proposed models or related resources to be developed.

Examples of resource-related projects suitable for this funding opportunity include, but are not limited to, development of mutant or transgenic models, NAMs, antibodies or other reagents, information resources, and informatics tools, and methods or tools for improving cryopreservation of genetic stocks, advancing techniques of regenerative medicine in models, and enhancing rigor and reproducibility of animal research.
