93.279 -- Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications to establish and operate a dynamic and adaptable drug development infrastructure, envisioned as a Center, to support the research community. This initiative aims to strengthen and expand the substance use disorder (SUD) drug development pipeline by accelerating the evaluation and validation of repurposed and repositioned drugs. The proposed drug development infrastructure will serve as a hub, providing comprehensive services to academic and biotech researchers at all stages of product development. These services will include Target Product Profiles creation, Freedom-to-Operate analysis, intellectual property consultations, regulatory guidance, and technical pipeline support. Prospective applicants are encouraged to develop strategies for building and managing this infrastructure, outlining processes for engaging the research community, soliciting proposals, and advancing high-quality projects that align with the mission of repurposing and repositioning medications for SUD treatment. Applications are not being solicited at this time. Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. This NOFO will utilize the U54 activity code. Investigators with expertise and insights in the areas of pharmacology, toxicology, neuroscience, and SUD drug development are encouraged to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO. In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise inin silicodiscovery, target validation, preclinical development, clinical protocol development, regulatory affairs, and intellectual property management will be encouraged and, these investigators should also begin considering applying for this application.
